Each August, the legendary town of Deadwood, S.D., comes alive for 10 days when nearly 500,000 bikers come from all over the world for the famous Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. But, in addition to a much publicized campaign stop by Republican presidential candidate John McCain, something else was different for the 2008 rally-cigars became an official part of the event.

On yet another new run, about 250 bikers, including a number of top bike builders, lined up their bikes along the streets of Deadwood for the first-ever Legends Ride. Participants enjoyed a celebrity reception and party at Deadwood Tobacco, co-sponsor of the event, before departing on a scenic 50-mile ride that ended at the Buffalo Chip for a concert featuring Sugarland and ZZ Top. The event, organized and co-sponsored by the Buffalo Chip raised nearly $38,000 for the Kids and Chrome Foundation.

Deadwood-September 2008

More than 250 Sturgis Rally goers joined an all-star roster of celebrities from film, television and the world of premium cigars for the first annual Legends Ride, a celebrity charity event produced by the Legendary Buffalo Chip.

The Legends Ride was held on Thursday, August 7th, 2008 during the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. The Buffalo Chip announced in a news release that 100 percent of each rider’s fee would be contributed directly to the charity of choice and nearly $38,000 was raised for the Kids and Chrome Foundation in this inaugural year. Among those making the 50-mile ride were Discovery Channels Bike Builders Roger Bourget, Jerry Covington, Roland Sands and Yasuyoshi “Chica” Chikazawa.

Typically I get to do a few short rides while I’m in Sturgis and this years Lon Nordbye, Director of Corporate Sponsorships at The Legendary Buffalo Chip, asked if I wanted to go on The Legends Ride. It seemed like a nice loop and a bunch of my friends were going, so I took the afternoon off and headed to Deadwood with Kirk and Lisa Taylor and Steve Broyles. It’s always great carving down the canyon from Sturgis to Deadwood, and after reaching the Silverado we were treated to VIP parking outside the casino. We headed inside the Silverado, got our credentials and then made our way down to Deadwood Tobacco. Deadwood Tobacco has one of the finest selections of premium cigars I have seen, and although I didn’t partake in smoking, I did wander into the humidor and admire the selection. Numerous cigar celebrities were on-hand to answer questions. We mostly kept to ourselves enjoying some sandwiches and a cold beverage in the air conditioning.

A total of 50 “Destination Duo” will be built and will feature a Panhead™ style power plant, a 5-speed kick or electric transmission, an original style 2 into 2 exhaust combination, a functional custom leather seat, an optional buddy seat and a choice of a Springer or hydraulic front-end. The bike encompasses the look of the first year of the American fully-suspended, functionally-driven motorcycle. This is the 1st of many projects that Sucker Punch Sally and Bruce Rossmeyer’s Destination Daytona are partnering in.

Drawing as many as 500,000 consumers and attendees in the past, Midwest hospitality coupled with the scenery and party-atmosphere make this event something special.
